Introduction to User-Defined Grids

Book Plotter offers two options for plotting an area of mapping by creating and overlaying a grid over the area to be plotted, These are:

Regular Grid

A Regular Grid is a text file which defines the 'real world' size of a cell, the top-left position of the grid and a matrix of cells which are to be printed by Book Plotter. It also stores any user-defined labelling system for the cells.

When plotting from a user-defined grid, the map within each grid cell is compressed into the 'Map Frame' area of the chosen print template. If the aspect ratio of this Map Frame area differs from the grid cell aspect ratio, then the full area of the cell will be plotted, plus any padding necessary to fill the Map Frame on the print template. You should therefore design your print template so that the aspect ratio of the Map Frame is the same as your user-defined grid cell.

Flexible Grid

A Flexible Grid is an xml file which defines the 'real world' size of a cell, the top-left position of the grid and a matrix of cells which are to be printed by Book Plotter. It also stores any user-defined labelling system for the cells. Flexible Grids are useful if the grid squares to be plotted are to be moved around so that they are no longer a grid. This could be used, for example, to plot a route where you would like to avoid pages being plotted with very little of a route actually appearing on the page. In this case the plot can be moved to centralise the route if required.

Appendix details the format of both types of user grid text file.
