Military Elevation Data.
Developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Association (NIMA) as a standard digital dataset in support of military applications. The data is constructed of a grid of elevation points set within Latitude and Longitude coordinate reference system. DTED is produced in 3 levels of detail named respectively; DTED 0, DTED 1 and DTED 2.
GDAL supports DTED Levels 0, 1 and 2 elevation data for read access. Elevation data is returned as a 16 bit signed integer. Appropriate projection (always WGS84) and georeferencing information is also returned. No other metadata is captured.
