Standalone Licensing

Standalone licensing uses a combination of a licence file and a hardware lock. Both must be present on the machine for the software to run.

If the hardware lock is a dongle the licence file is explicitly linked to the dongle number, so they must be used together.

To allow multiple users to share licences that are locked to dongles the administrator can:

Install the same licence file on each machine and manually move the dongle between machines as required or

If multiple licences and dongles are in use the licence file can tbe installed on all machines and any one of the dongles can be used.

Note: The second point regarding multiple licences is only true if different products are used, for example it would be valid if a Map Modeller and a Map Editor are installed. However, it would not be valid if two of the same product are installed, i.e. two Map Modellers or two Map Editors.

Standalone Licensing primarily uses a dongle as the hardware lock. This must be present on the standalone machine for the licence to run. There are circumstances under which the user will be issued with a licence file that is not locked to a dongle:

A time limited licence. This will run for a defined number of days from installation. It has an overall expiry date after which it will not run at all. This type of licence is usually issued for evaluations.

A dongle free licence. The licence file is locked to a feature of the hardware. Both the licence file and defined hardware must be present on the machine; if one is not present, the licence will not run. This means that a dongle free licence will only run on the machine for which it has been created. If the hardware feature to which the licence file is locked is removed or altered, the licence file will not work. Currently the locking criteria is the MAC address which MUST be static for a standalone dongle free licence installation.
