The identity of an Item is reflected by its Item ID system property. So for example if you change the Pen property of an Item, the new Item will keep the Item ID value of the old Item.
Generally SIS tries to maintain the attribute data on an Item. When an Item is edited, it will retain its user-defined attribute data where possible. If a LineString item is converted to a Polygon or vice versa, attribute data is retained. If two LineString items are joined, the resulting LineString item will retain the attribute data that was on the first LineString item identified. If a LineString item is split in two using Delete Path [CAD-Alter], both resulting LineString items will hold identical attribute data.
Commands which merge all of the selected items together into a single Item, will take on the identity and attribute data of the dominant selected Item (i.e. the one with grab handles).
The Item ID property is unique within a dataset, i.e. two items on different datasets can have the same Item ID, but two items on the same dataset cannot have the same Item ID.
