Symmetric Difference

Conditions for use:

• Item Class: LineString / Polygon
• Minimum number selected: 2
• Minimum item status: Editable

Associated commands:

• Dissolve
• Intersect
• Subtract
• Union

Description:

 Symmetric Difference can be used where items overlap one another, to delete the overlapping region, leaving a hole.

Where there are multiple levels of overlap, they are alternately deleted or left intact.

Example:

1. Select the Polygon items (two or more).
   
   
2. Select Symmetric Difference.
   
   The area of overlap is deleted, and a MultiPolygon item is created as shown below:
    
   

If there are multiple areas of overlap, they are alternately deleted or left intact:
